Canon G9.... Hat Creek

I took my Canon G9 "point and shoot" camera along this year to Hat Creek and took about 300 photos with it. My main camera was a Canon Xti DSLR (digital single lens reflex) with an APS sized sensor and it did fine as usual.  But I wanted to try the smaller G9 to see how it handled some of the tougher lighting situations... It did a surprisingly good job... Here is one I like....

Hat Creek #4

A wild fire rolled through The Hat Creek area last month... I spent quite a bit of time in the burn area....

I ended up with over 1900 photos from this year's trip  ... Many are multiple exposures of the same scene...

Florance Cop

HDR

In 2007 I went up to the Hat Creek area, like I do every year, to play golf and take pictures. A lot of pictures. I took well over 700 pictures that year and ended up with 599 that I kept. That's a lot of keepers and, in glancing at them the other night, I was struck by the high number of shots I kept on the computer. Usually I will delete almost half of any group of shots I take right off the bat ...so I went through them to see what was going on....

Evidently I was thinking of HDR photography during this trip.
HDR stands for high dynamic range. HDR photography entails making a series of photos with different exposures and combining them in software to create an image that displays all or most of the highlights and shadows of a given scene. The finished picture has detail in the shadow areas and in the brightest areas of the photo, something a camera can't do in one exposure given the limited dynamic range of today's digital cameras. Usually you take 3 to 6 pictures of a given scene changing the exposure for each one using a tripod to make sure the camera doesn't move between shots.

I had taken 3 to sometimes 7 shots of a bunch of individual scenes planning to combine them in Photoshop to create HDR images. I had done a few but I got distracted and there are about 30 to 35 groups of shots that have yet to be combined..... That's why I ended up with so many images.

Here is one I combined.  It has problems for sure .. the sky is overexposed and some of the dark areas are blocked up ... HDR also gives a photo an odd feel - there are halos around some areas but over all it's not too bad.  Any way it is the best I could do with Photoshop ... There are third party programs that do the same thing, maybe a little better...I might try one at some point. We'll see...

The is the kind of image I think I like best ... nothing out of the ordinary ... just a garden variety landscape ... I think I like this so much because this is where I like to be .. out in a park somewhere hiking and taking photos ...

photo manipulation

Like it or not, digital photography has give us a lot of new tools to manipulate photos.  Sometimes it's  not whether you can but whether you should tweak a photo... these two versions of the same photo show what is possible...

Ansel Adams said "the image is the score, the print is the performance" .... I might be paraphrasing here but you get the idea ... I like being able to give a photo a different look ...... or two or three different looks  ... It's fun to work on a photo and see what happens........

9/10/01

We all will remember 9/11/01... the day the World Trade Center was attacked. You probably remember where you were and what you were doing when you heard the news.  Things like that tend to stand out in our memory ......

I remember where I was and what I was doing the day before the attacks as well.

It was my first look at a Lunar occultation of Saturn.  On November 10th 2001, at about 4 in the morning, Saturn ducked behind the Moon and I took it's picture...

Taken with a Nikon 995 if I remember right.  I took it as a .jpg ... I didn't know about raw files at the time.   It's pretty rough but you can see what appears to be a tiny Saturn about to move behind the Moon.  I held the Nikon up to the eyepiece of the 24 inch reflecting telescope  at Robert Ferguson Observatory.... this was the best of several shots. A tough subject because of the Moon's brightness and the faint light from Saturn.  but a little work in Lightroom helped out....

About 30 hours later everything changed..........

Spring Lake

About a five minute walk away, Spring Lake Park is a favorite place for me to take the camera for a stroll.  This Park gets more use than any other in the county and there's always something to shoot....
